A JOURNEY WITH LOT - CHALLENGE 2

March 31 - April 20  / 2014

On Monday morning March 31st, the second challenge will be visible in the wiki.

You can work on this challenge until Sunday April 20th.

Try to be as creative as possible with texts, videos, photos or Social Media!

We invite you to look closely at the contributions of your Learning Circle partners.

Discuss in your group the similarities and differences in the responses to the challenges.

Education and

protection against child labour.

Lot thinks about her possessions. Are these things ‘cool’?

It all seems so normal to have a lot of things.

We go to school, come home and make some extra money

By delivering the newspaper or working for a few hours in the supermarket.

With your pocket money and the money you earn you can buy some 'cool' things.

But there are also places in the world that are not like this.

There are 215 million children who do not attend school and

who have to work to earn money for their family.

Lot wonders how this is:

To have no choice.. working in a factory every day since you were six,

sometimes far away from your family.

How can you still be a child?

Introduction

Lot wonders why many children do not attend school.

Isn’t it a fact that all children have the right to education?

Lot sees that many children don’t have a choice ... for them; no work means that you cannot buy any food.

This is called child labour. You cannot go to school, even if you want to.

Every child has the right to go to school.

How do you think about that in your group? Do you feel that you 'have to go' to school or 'may go'  to school?

When is work that children do 'child labour' and when 'earn something extra'

Discuss in your group: the questions above and what the reasons may be that children are working and not attending

school.

Task 1:

Questions and Research:

1. What is the child's right that belongs to 'education' and 'protection against child labour'?

2. Every child has the right to education. What do you think, do all the children go to school in your country?

Research if what you think is true.

What about your own city or town?

Where did you find the information?

3. How important is it that every child can go to school?

What does your future look like as a result? ...

And for a child that doesn't go to school?

4. What would the world be like if kids could choose for themselves the right to go to school or the right to work?

Formulate your opinion and give some clear arguments.

Choose a way to share in this wiki what you have discovered by answering the questions.

It can be a presentation, video, text drawing etc..

Introduction 2:

Research and presentation:

Check your gear! Look closely at the stuff you have.

Your shoes, T-shirt, cell phone ... do you know where they come from and who produced them?

In other words: Do you know how 'cool' your stuff actually is?

No child labour in this world...

How can you help to reach that goal? By not buying these things?

The result will be that those children have no work, so no food and no alternative.

Is there another way that works?

Yes, there are many organizations that are committed to 'Child Labour Free Zones’.

These are villages or areas where child labour no longer exists and where everyone works together to make it possible for children to go to school and improve the education. The standard of governments, employers, parents and children themselves have changed:

A change from ‘child labour is a necessary evil’ to ‘child labour is unacceptable’.

Take a look at this video:

Action research

When you buy products in a store, it's sometimes hard to see who made them. Maybe children made your clothes, shoes or toys. Or did they harvest the cocoa and hazelnuts for your chocolate?

It is important to know who made the products that you want to buy, so you can make your own choice in what to buy.

To inform you, as a consumer, companies can contribute to the fight against child labour!

Assignment:

- Find a company in your area that uses or sells products from abroad.

- You investigate how this company informs you about child labour as a consumer.

- Think together of a form of research that gives information on the company.

You can think of an interview, online information etc.

-  Does the company take measures to combat child labour in their production lines?

-  If so: how and what?

-  Does the company experiences difficulties in combating child labour?

-  Which other questions would you like to ask?

Choose a way to share in this wiki what you've discovered in the interview with the company.

It can be a presentation, video, text drawing etc..
